The Basics of the French Drain

Last updated 5 years ago

If ground water tends to run towards your home, a French drain can be a great solution. This simple underground pipe system moves water away from your home so that it doesn’t flow under your foundation, creating instability. Watch this video to learn how French drains work.

French drains consist of an interlocking length of perforated pipes. Once the pipes are securely attached to each other, the entire unit is put in a trench lined with landscaping fabric. The pipe is then covered with gravel, which helps to filter the water that flows into it. French drains require little maintenance. Occasionally, they need to be flushed with a garden hose to clear dirt and debris.
