A Look at Your Drainage System Options

Last updated 4 years ago

Home foundations often fail because of poor water drainage. Either water pools around the house, or the soil near the foundation gets waterlogged. Since these issues can eventually cause severe foundation damage, it’s important for homeowners to improve drainage around their residence using a drainage system.

There are two main types of drainage system options: surface drains and french drains. Surface drainage systems consist of a few ground-level area drains that are connected to PVC piping. When it rains, water flows down the drains, into the piping, and is transferred away from the house. French drains consist of perforated PVC piping that is installed in a deep trench and covered with gravel. This drain keeps groundwater from going underneath the home, since it collects the water and transfers it to another location.

Determining which drainage system will be right for you depends on the slope of your backyard, how much it rains your area, and other factors. For more information on these drain types or to have your existing yard drain repaired, call (972) 484-1200 to talk to Structured Foundation Repairs.
